These resources are used to build and upgrade areas inside the workplace called workstations. Professions are similar to careers, but you can go with your Sim to the workplace while they are there to help them earn resources, or simply send them to work offsite. See the SimDex tab in your Active Tasks menu to view your progress unlocking all possible buildable locations.
